Because sometimes you don't need professional help, you just need someone to talk to.

Hello, I'm Sarah, Founder of Kalmi

My Story

Since my teenage years, I've faced mental health challenges, and while therapy seemed like the solution, the high costs and lack of connection with the right therapist made it impossible to continue.

I always felt anxious before visits, and the conversations rarely went beyond the surface. It was frustrating to stop therapy without achieving
the deeper understanding I needed, but I couldn't justify the expense. And sometimes, I didn't actually need professional help, I just needed someone I could talk to.

When I moved to a new town where I didn't know anyone and was starting from scratch, it became even harder to find emotional support as my friends were far away and grew busy with their own lives.

It was harder to make friends in my new home than I thought it would be and I got lonely. According to the World Health Organization, the world is facing a loneliness epidemic; 1.5 billion people around the world report regularly feeling lonely. We're more disconnected from each other more than ever; social media is full of highlight reels and our day-to-day reality doesn't measure up. We shy away from admitting we're struggling and keep it hidden inside, keeping up appearances rather than lean on a shoulder for support. But we all need a shoulder, sometimes. It's not healthy to allow your emotions to fester inside you, unresolved.

For me, I found writing in a journal helped to an extent.

But I wondered—what if your journal could talk back?

Kalmi was born from that idea.

Kalmi, available wherever I am with my phone, keeps the conversation going: it asks questions that you may never have considered before and provides potential alternate points of view and helps reframe my perspective on a situation.

In its infancy, Kalmi has already helped me through difficult times, providing unbiased feedback, deeper insights into my thought patterns, and a non-judgmental space to explore emotions I didn’t want to express out loud.

My mind is endlessly curious and creative, recognising problems and looking for solutions, particularly driven to make a social impact and make a difference in improving lives.

Based in Gippsland, Australia with a background in writing and publishing, passion for continual learning, fascination with new technologies (like the possibilities for generative AI) and entrepreneurial solution-focused outlook, I am bringing Kalmi to life to help people proactively support their mental health and prevent decline.

So far, I am a team of one, but I am looking forward to bringing on board others passionate about making a positive impact to emotional wellbeing with skills that complement those I lack.
